Stanley Kubrick : Special Edition 10 Disc Box Set [1968] [DVD]:
To date Stanley Kubrick remains one of cinema's most controversial film-maker. This box set highlights some of his greatest work, from the visionary 2001:A Space Odyssey, the violent and highly-debated A Clockwork Orange, the chilling adaptation of The Shining, the acclaimed war drama Full Metal Jacket, to his final piece, the controversial Eyes Wide Shut. And to top it off, the treat of this box set, the fascinating Stanley Kubrick: A Life In Pictures.

Stanley Kubrick was one of the most acclaimed and controversial filmmakers of his generation, but he was also an intensely private man who rarely gave interviews and produced most of his films under a shroud of secrecy, which tended to foster a great deal of rumour and speculation about his working methods. Jan Harlan, who worked as Kubrick's assistant and executive producer on several projects directed this feature-length documentary. Narrated by Tom Cruise, this offers a rare in-depth look into Kubrick's career as a filmmaker, structured around interviews with a number of actors, writers, technicians, composers, friends, and family who speak on the record about his relentless perfectionism, his creative vision, his life both on and off the set, his relationships with actors, his unrealised projects, and his importance and influence as an artist.

Among those who share their thoughts in Stanley Kubrick: A Life In Pictures are actors Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Malcolm McDowell, Peter Ustinov, and Keir Dullea; writers Arthur C. Clarke and Michael Herr; special effects artist Douglas Trumbull; composers Wendy Carlos and Gyorgy Ligeti; filmmakers Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Paul Mazursky, and Sydney Pollack; and Kubrick's spouse Christiane Kubrick.

The choice of titles is undeniably spot on, and the extras really give a sense of who the man was, what his legacy is, and the privilege it was for the people who collaborated with him on his cinematic journey. -- Jennifer Kilchenmann

Customer Reviews (Average 4.5 from 13) :
Great Box Set from one of all-time best movie directors.
Rating:5

This Stanley Kubrick 10 Disc Box Set is a wonderful box. It contains 5 of the best Kubrick titles and with a lot of extras. The box itself has a very nice graphic design and its a must have in every Kubrick fan desk.

3 1/2 stars for unrespectful screen ratio
Rating:3

Great boxset with a bunch of valuable extra material but beware ! 3 out of 5 movies do not respect their original screen ratio : Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket and Shining are presented as a 1:78 widescreen.
Maybe this "rectangularization" won't hurt large TV-set owners but remember that Kubrick shot them as 1:33... (which was respected on the "Collection Stanley Kubrick" DVDs by the same Warner Home Video)

So : 5/5 for the rich extras and the low price but 2/5 for this unrespect.

Great!

These are five of the greatest movies ever made, and each film is unique, original and visionary.

It's amazing how Kubrick could transfer his genius to different genres.

The documentary's also really good.

I know one reviewer has complained that other films weren't included (I would've been quite glad if I hadn't have had to buy Dr Strangelove separately), but a line has to be drawn somewhere. He says he can understand leaving out Paths of Glory and Barry Lyndon, but not Spartacus. However, many fans and critics consider Barry Lyndon and Paths of Glory to be two of Kubrick's greatest works (indeed, Paths of Glory is 43rd on the IMDB top 250, higher than all of his films except Strangelove), while it could be argued that Spartacus was more of a Kirk Douglas project than a Stanley Kubrick.

Anyway, at this price, one really can't complain about the movies selected for their 10 disc Kubrick collection.

It's also worth mentioning that the packaging is lovely.

excellent but surprisingly incomplete
Rating:4

All great movies and very worthwhile extra's but why was the opportunity missed to make it "complete" with all his greatest movies?
OK I can see why you might not include The Killing/Paths Of Glory/Killer's Kiss/Fear and desire/Barry Lyndon.... BUT why no Spartacus, no Dr Strangelove, no Lolita????
