Rating:5 A brilliant Biography of a man notoriously hard to pin down. The talking-heads style of programme really brings the characters to life, and there is some fantastic acting throughout. Recommend for anyone interested in the greatest Victorian author - though be prepared to think twice about the man! Added DVDs are also a joy to watch. A quality Dickens product by any standards Rating:4 wow! I love this boxset, the full UNCOVERING THE REAL DICKENS documentary hosted by the worlds foremost expert on the man himself, a production which tells Dickens story in a most unique fashion. Well known actors portray important people in his life (daughter, parents etc) and are interviewed...gives it a very modern feel, this is interspersed with presenter Ackroyd giving facts/moving the lifestory along and we also have dramatic scenes/interviews with Dickens himself played superbly by Anton Lesser, who you will have you convinced your watching/listening to Dickens himself. We also have David Copperfield, Dickens most autobiographical book, dramatised by the BBC and starring young Daniel "harry potter" radcliffe. Finally but in my opinion the GEM of the collection is A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Now this isnt another dramatisation of the tale, instead its a unique and amazing chance to see Anton Lesser again as Dickens, doing a reading of the entire book, the same way Dickens used to on tour. The period detail is sublime, the whole audience in period dress, it really gives you a feel of what it must have been like to attend one of his readings. A great set! |
