I first watched this series in the early 70's and although some of the story had faded in my memory, probably because I had missed a few episodes when shown on the TV, I thoroughly enjoyed each and every episode. Such wonderful exact detail put into the production, depicting the era and poverty, also the costumes and way of life. I became so attached to many of the characters, it was wonderfully acted. I was very sorry to come to the end of the story. A real five star Plus and one that I shall watch again. Old But Good Rating:5 I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this series. Although made in the seventies it doesn't have a dated look or feel to it. Was interesting seeing a young Taggart ....ie Mark McManus . Why can't they make tv series like this any more? Rating:5 Sam was made in the 1970s and strangely it has been largely forgotten while many other classic tv series that were made at the same time often get repeated on tv. Set in a Yorkshire mining community in the 1930s, Sam is a boy who returns to his family home after his father left to go overseas. In this hard environment where few escape a life down t'pit Sam has to cope with the demands of his tough new life. In the first series the story follows a logical course without any contrived plots, as the daily demands of just surviving are enough to provide gripping drama. It's not all depressing though with the occasional flashes of warm humour from the excellent cast. The subsequent two series move the story on past the war and the child actor is replaced with a young Mark McManus of Taggart fame. These episodes are perhaps not quite so enjoyable, being more conventional dramatically in the way the story of one man's life moves on, but they are still good quality stories with numerous familiar faces appearing. All 39 episodes are presented here. |
